Stainless Steel
'Stainless' is a term that has been adopted as a generic name for these steels which are iron alloys with a minimum of 10.5% chromium. Stainless Steel now refers to a range of steel types and grades noted for resistance to corrosion or oxidation. The Chromium content creates a thin layer of oxide on the surface called the passive layer. This layer prevents further corrosion of the surface. Increasing the levels of Chromium increases resistance to corrosion.
Stainless steel also contains varying amounts of Carbon, Silicon and Manganese. Other elements such as Nickel and Molybdenum may be added to impart other useful properties such as enhanced formability and increased corrosion resistance. strength.
Selection of the correct type or grade should be based on the corrosion resistance requirements of the application or environment. Then additional mechanical or physical properties may need to be considered to achieve the service performance requirements.
Steel Express can supply stainless steel in AISI/SAE, DIN, Werkstoff grades or equivalents:

Aluminium
1000 series Aluminium: are the purest forms of aluminium, they are resistant to chemical attack and weathering, easily worked and welded, but the lowest strength aluminium. They are often used for chemical processing equipment and other applications where material purity is important. Being highly ductile 1000 series aluminium is used for metal pressings of all types.
Aluminium alloy 6082: is a medium strength aluminium alloy offering excellent corrosion resistance and is widely used for light to medium strength applications. It has the highest strength of the 6000 series alloys. 6082 aluminium alloy combines good formability, weldability, corrosion resistance and strength after heat treatment. 6082 is the most common heat treated alloy plate from stock. In plate form, Aluminium alloy 6082 is the alloy most commonly used for machining.
Aluminium alloy 6063: is a medium strength aluminium alloy, often referred to as an architectural alloy. It is normally used for intricate extrusions. 6063 has high corrosion resistance, a good surface finish, is readily welded and can be anodised. Most commonly available as T6 temper, in the T4 condition it has good formability. Aluminium alloy 6063 is typically used in: Architectural applications, extrusions, window and door frames, shop fittings and irrigation tubing.
