Spring Steel - Carbon Spring Steel, Annealed or Ready Hardened

Spring Steel - the type of steel used for the production of springs. Spring steel is a medium to high carbon steel usually containing between 0.40% and 0.80% with a high yield strength allowing objects to return to their original shape after being subject to significant bending or twisting. Coil springs are normally manufactured from steel wire, spring steel strip is used for the manufacture of flat springs. Spring steel is also used in a applications where hardness or resistance to bending is required, such as lock parts or tools such as blades and cutters and also clutch plates.

The elastic properties of a spring is used to store or absorb mechanical energy. Small spring components can be made from pre-hardened spring steel (hardened and tempered), this has the advantage of not incuring the costs of hardening after manufacture. Large components are usually made from steel supplied in the annealed condition and are hardened after the fabrication process.

Spring steel is available in different forms including wire, when is often referred to as “piano wire” or “music wire”.  The wire form is used to make coil springs.

The most common carbon spring steel grades are CS70 and CS80 in cold rolled form (0.7% Carbon and 0.8% Carbon respectively) part of the BS1449 standard.

Spring Steel Stock

Our range of grades of carbon spring steel include:

BS 1449: CS70, CS80, CS95

BS970: EN42, EN43, EN45, EN45A, EN47

Available in annealed, half hard of fully hardened condition.

We are stockholders suppliers the following grades of Spring Steels:

CS70

CS70 spring steel are also stocked as spring steel sheet up to 4.76mm thick. CS70 is normally supplied in the annealed condition, suitable for bending, shaping and forming, before final heat treatment. Used in the manufacture of a wide variety of springs.

Close equivalents are EN42, DIN CK67, AISI/SAE 1070/1074, Euronorm C67S/C75S

(data sheet & typical analysis available on request)

CS80

CS80 is normally supplied in the hardened, tempered condition. This has the advantage that it can be used to manufacture components that do not incur the cost of final hardening.

Close equivalents: EN42, DIN CK85, AISI/SAE 1084, Euronorm C85S

Typical applications: Flat springs, clutch plates, blades: machine knives; cutters; saw blades.

(data sheet & typical analysis available on request)

CS95

CS95 can be used for products that require thinner steel strip or higher tensile strengths.

CS95 is equivalent to BS970 EN44, DIN CK101, AISI/SAE 1095, Euronorm C100S

Typical applications: Flat springs, clutch plates, blades, compressor valves, shock absorbers.

(data sheet & typical analysis available on request)
EN42

EN42 (UK BS970) is a close equivalent of both CS70 and CS80 having a carbon content of between 0.70-0.85.

Available in sheets, flats, squares and diameters.

(data sheet & typical analysis available on request)

EN43

EN43 - An unalloyed medium carbon spring steel.

Available in sheets, flats, squares and diameters.

(data sheet & typical analysis available on request).

EN45

EN45 - A silicon manganese spring steel.
Suitable for oil hardening and tempering.

(data sheet & typical analysis available on request).

EN47

EN47 - chromium vanadium spring steel. EN47 is and oil quenching high quality spring steel giving good wear resistance after heat treatment

(data sheet & typical analysis available on request).
