Steel Express is a stockholder and supplier of high speed steel throughout the UK. We stock the listed grades in round bar, flat bar and plate.

High speed steel grades offer a higher hardness at high temperatures that standard tool steels. This high red hardness means that tools made with high speed steel can withstand higher temperatures without losing its temper, it also offers higher wear resistance. As a result it is possible to cut faster what with normal tools steel – hence the name high speed steel. See our tool steel application chart

We stock tungsten-molybdenum grades and cobalt-molybdenum grades of high speed steel.

M2 High Speed Steel

M2 is a medium alloyed high speed steel which has good machinability. The composition of M2 gives a good combination of toughness and hardness. Widely used for cutting tools such as twist drills, taps, milling cutters, saws, knives etc. Also suitable for cold work applications in tools for punching, forming and pressing

M42 High Speed Steel

M42 is highly cobalt alloyed. It's composition makes for a good combination of toughness and hardness. M42 is a steel to be used in conditions where the demand for red-hardness is greatly important. Due to it's well balanced properties M42 has come into wide use for all cutting tools
