420 Stainless Steel

Grade 420 (UNS S42000) is a martensitic steel with improved machinability through the addition of Sulphur. Alloy 420 is a hardenable, martensitic stainless steel that is a modification of 410 stainless. Alloy 420 contains a minimum of 12% chromium which is just sufficient to give corrosion resistant properties but its resistance is lower than common austenitic grades. Its best corrosion resistance is achieved when the metal is hardened and polished or surface grounded.

420 stainless steel has good ductility in the annealed condition but is capable of being hardened to a minimum Rockwell hardness of 50 HRC. This is the highest hardness of the 12% chromium grades. Fabrication should be by methods that allow for its poor weldability and also allow for a final harden and temper heat treatment.

Typical applications

Alloy 420 is used for a variety of applications where good corrosion and outstanding hardness is necessary. Nuts, blots and studs, gears, valve parts, shear blades, cutlery, scissors, surgical instruments, washing machine components. 420 is widely used in the medical and cutlery industries.
